Shimla, October 17
The Lions Club Shimla celebrated 70 years of Lionism in India on Saturday, honouring 12 senior members for their longstanding association with the organisation and contributions to social service and public welfare.
The function, held at the Shimla Club, recognised the experience and dedication of veteran members, who were presented with trophies, certificates and traditional mufflers.
Lionism represents the philosophy of humanitarian service, fellowship and community welfare followed by members of Lions Clubs International, a worldwide voluntary service organisation founded in Chicago in 1917. Guided by the motto “We Serve”, the movement encourages members to work collectively for the welfare of disadvantaged sections, promote health and education, assist communities during disasters and address local social needs through voluntary action.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Dalip Sharma highlighted the seven-decade journey of Lionism in India, emphasising compassion, brotherhood and service to humanity. He said the experience and guidance of senior members remained valuable assets for the organisation and could inspire younger generations to participate in community service.
Area Leader Engineer Manmohan Verma appreciated the veteran members for their longstanding association with the movement. He said their dedication and commitment had helped strengthen the organisation and sustain its tradition of voluntary service.
Those honoured included Anil Kumar Sood, Devendra Kumar Mittal, D.K. Chauhan, J.S. Guleria, Kapil Dev Sood, K.D. Chandel, Naresh Lakhanpal, O.P. Mehta, P.S. Panwar, Subhash Agarwal, Sushil Kumar Sood and Sushil Sood.
Senior member Subhash Agarwal, who has been associated with Lionism since 1994, cut a cake to mark the occasion.
Zone Chairperson Gopal Krishna Vaidya, Dr. Rajesh Chanana, Ravi Chand Sood, Sanjeev Khanna, Vikram Verma, Vimal Kumar Sood, Vinod Paghwal and Prof. C.L. Sankhyan were among those present.
The programme concluded with a community feast and an exchange of greetings. The club reiterated its commitment to humanitarian service and public welfare in keeping with the Lions motto, “We Serve.”
