Anil Sharma announces road surfacing work to Malori tunnel

BJP MLA from Mandi Sadar Anil Sharma has announced that the long-pending road surfacing work on the Mandi–Malori Tunnel stretch will soon provide relief to commuters facing dust, potholes and poor road conditions.

In a statement, Sharma said the Public Works Department (PWD) had issued a tender for improvement and surfacing of the road from Mandi Gagal Chail Chowk through Janjheli Chhatri Rana Bag Nagan road towards Malori Tunnel, covering a stretch of 1.65 km.

According to the award letter issued by the Nerchowk Division of the PWD on October 28, the work has been awarded to government contractor Ajay Pathania for Rd 1.60 crore, approximately 4.09 per cent below the tender amount. The project includes laying a fresh surface and providing 30-mm-thick bituminous concrete.

The department has stipulated a completion period of three months, reckoned after 15 days from the issuance of the award letter. The contractor has also been asked to furnish performance security of Rs 8.01 lakh and execute the formal agreement before payment can be released.

Sharma said he had taken up the matter seriously with the Secretary, Public Works Department, to expedite the improvement of the road, which had remained in poor condition for a considerable period.

“I am always ready to make efforts for the development of Mandi,” Sharma said, adding that the work would improve connectivity between Mandi, Malori Tunnel and the national highway, besides providing substantial relief to residents and commuters from dust and mud.

The project is expected to improve road conditions on an important local connectivity stretch, subject to timely execution by the contractor.
