Four-lane affected farmers accuse BJP of betraying, demand compensation
Shimla, May 23
In a recent development, farmers affected by the Kiratpur-Manali and other National Highway projects have accused the opposition BJP of betraying them by failing to provide four times the compensation promised. Joginder Walia, the Convenor of the Land Acquisition Affected Forum, expressed disappointment in the former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur and the previous government for not fulfilling the commitment made by Prime Minister and Union Surface Transport Minister.
Walia highlighted that despite the BJP government taking credit for the four-lane projects, they did not announce the necessary factors to provide four times compensation to the affected farmers. This failure resulted in a significant defeat for the BJP in the Assembly Elections. He further noted that the incomplete work on the Naulakha-Dador service road and the absence of essential facilities such as underground roads, footpaths, and bus stands have caused inconvenience and increased the risk of accidents for the local residents.

Reminding the Sukhwinder Sukhu-led Congress government of their promises during the previous elections, the affected farmers demanded immediate action to fulfill the assurance of four times compensation. They emphasized the need to implement the Land Acquisition Act of 2013 to ensure fair compensation for the farmers’ land.
The farmers warned that if the Congress government fails to initiate the necessary steps to provide four times compensation, they will be compelled to launch a united struggle in the near future. Additionally, they called upon the National Highway authorities to expedite the provision of basic facilities to alleviate the suffering of the common people and improve road safety.
