IMD warns: Orange alert, heavy rainfall to lash 8 distts of Himachal Pradesh

The citizens of Himachal Pradesh may not find any respite from this devastating wet weather anytime soon, as the Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for eight districts of Himachal Pradesh on July 28th and 29th. The forecast indicates that precipitation activity is only likely to reduce in intensity therafter with light to moderate scattered rainfall in the state from 30th July for the subsequent two days.
A media communiqué by the IMD stated that over the next five days, Himachal Pradesh is expected to experience light to moderate rain accompanied by isolated spells of heavy rainfall in low and mid hill districts. They added that from 26th to 27th July, there will be an increase in rainfall activity, with a possibility of isolated spells of very heavy rainfall in districts like Chamba, Kangra, Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Bilaspur, Solan, and Sirmaur. The districts of Una, Hamirpur, Kinnaur, and Lahaul Spiti may also experience heavy rainfall during this period. However these four districts have been kept out of the orange alert.
Noteworthy, that so far the ongoing monsoon has claimed 164 lives, 12 are missing, number of injured 192 and it has wrecked losses of  more than 5000 crores. A total number of 48 flashfloods have been recorded and 67 incidents of landslides have been noted in the period since June 24 onwards.
This morning a cloudburst occurred at Garsa valley at Panchanala of Kullu district in Himachal Pradesh, the administration confirmed that two bridges and five houses got washed away in the flash flood and rising of water level and number of other houses were also partly damaged. According to the information received at the district headquarter said that cloudburst in Panchnala of Gadsa Valley around 0409 hrs today. The impact of cloud burst was caused heavy loss to public communication, Infrastructure and property isolating the two patwar circles of the area in the nature disaster. The Bhuntar-Gadsa Maniyar road has also been damaged at many places.
As a result of the expected rainfall, there could be disruptions in traffic and other essential services in hilly districts of the state, stated weathermen. Flash floods may occur along watersheds and other channels in districts such as Kangra, Chamba, Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Sirmaur, Solan, Kinnaur, and Lahaul Spiti. Landslides are also possible in vulnerable areas. In addition, occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall is anticipated, which could further create difficulties for commuters in hilly districts.
The average maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain normal over the next four to five days.
