Heatwave sweeps Himachal as rains recede

Following a respite from heavy rains that drenched the picturesque mountains of Himachal Pradesh, the state is now grappling with a sudden surge in temperatures. Reports indicate that the mercury has crossed 30 degrees Celsius in 11 cities across the State. Una, in particular, experienced a sweltering high of 34 degrees Celsius during the last 24 hours.
While the heatwave sweeps through the state, all cities except Chamba are facing temperatures ranging from 1 to 6 degrees above their normal averages. Keylong, a city known for its cooler climate, has experienced an unexpected increase in temperature, soaring to 25.7 degrees Celsius, a staggering 6.7 degrees above the normal. Kalpa and Bhuntar recorded temperatures 3 degrees higher than their usual readings, while Shimla, Sundernagar, Dharamshala, Una, Solan, Manali, Kangra, and Mandi all witnessed temperatures exceeding their typical norms by 1 to 2.5 degrees Celsius.
Despite the discomfort caused by the heatwave, residents of Himachal Pradesh are relieved to have a break from the heavy rains that had inundated the region. Over the past 10 days, the state received only 15.7mm of rainfall, which is a stark contrast to the usual 56.4mm of rainfall expected during this period. This has resulted in a 72 percent reduction in rainfall compared to the historical average.
The weakening of the monsoon in the mountains since August 24 has contributed to this shift in weather patterns. Fortunately, the meteorological department has reported that there is no chance of rain for the next six days, offering a respite from the relentless downpours that have caused flooding and road closures.
However, the aftermath of the heavy rains has left a significant impact on the state’s infrastructure. Currently, 128 roads remain closed due to recent rains, disrupting transportation and causing inconvenience for the people of Himachal Pradesh. More than 350 bus routes remain non-operational due to these road closures.
In the immediate future, some areas in the state may experience light to moderate rainfall. According to the Meteorological Department’s latest bulletin, Amb, Bharwai and Bharmana, Dharamshala and Indora in Kangra, and Nadaun and Badsar in Hamirpur are expected to receive rain within the next two to three hours.
As Himachal Pradesh grapples with the challenges posed by the changing weather patterns, residents are hopeful that the dry spell will bring relief to the region, allowing authorities to address the issues caused by the recent heavy rains and road closures.
