Shimla, Aug 19
Under the banner of the Kisan Sabha, farmers in Himachal Pradesh are gearing up to escalate their protests against the state and central governments over the acquisition of fertile lands. The issue has sparked outrage, especially in areas like Nathpa Jhakri, Rampur, Parvati, Malana, Prini, Uhal-3, and Kol Dam, where affected farmers argue they have received inadequate compensation for their valuable lands.
During a recent convention, accusations were leveled against the previous BJP government led by Jai Ram Thakur. It was alleged that the administration deliberately lowered land circle rates, allowing the acquisition of lands valued in crores for just a few lakhs, leaving many farmers, whose livelihoods depend on these lands, in a difficult situation. Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promises to apply a factor of four for compensation, both the former BJP government and the current Congress government, under Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, have been criticized for ignoring the farmers’ plight.
In response, the Kisan Sabha has resolved to intensify its efforts, planning district-level conventions, signature campaigns, and the submission of memorandums. Protests are scheduled at local levels, with major dharnas planned at SDM and Tehsil offices in Neerath, Kotgarh, and Rampur on September 16, 17, and 18. These demonstrations will bring attention to the grievances of those affected by the Sunni Hydel Project.
The convention saw participation from representatives across various districts, including Mandi, Shimla, Kullu, Kangra, Sirmaur, and Solan. Farmers from Balh, Sundarnagar, Joginder Nagar, Balichowki, and other areas within the Mandi district shared their experiences of government exploitation.
The Kisan Sabha’s resolution underlined the importance of building stronger organizations and providing a unified direction to their struggle. The farmers remain committed to holding the government accountable and seeking justice for their lost lands.
