Shimla, Dec 18,
A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged over a allegedly fake menu circulated on social media during Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s recent visit to Village Tikkar in Himachal Pradesh’s Kupvi region of Chopal. The controversy revolves around the mention of “junglefowl” (wild chicken or ‘Jangli Murga’) being served at the December 13 dinner hosted in the CM’s honor.
The FIR, confirmed by police authorities, was filed by Pradhan of Panchayat Kulag, and Neetu Kumar, who stated that the women of the village had meticulously prepared traditional Himachali dishes to showcase their culinary heritage during the event. However, an allegedly fabricated menu listing “wild chicken” began circulating online and in print, creating a furor.
Reportedly, Chauhan and Kumar termed the menu a “malicious attempt” to tarnish the cultural image of the village and its people in the complaint. “There is no such thing as wild chicken in our area,” the complaint noted, adding that the misinformation had caused unrest in the region, particularly in the Chetha area.
Kupvi police have registered the case under Sections 356 and 353(2) of the BNS, accusing unknown persons of defamation and spreading false and inflammatory information. Reports point that evidence, including Facebook URLs, has been submitted to aid the investigation, which is focused on tracing the origins of the fake menu and identifying those behind the alleged propaganda.
Noteworthy that the Chief Minister’s visit, initially aimed at promoting welfare activities in that area, had inadvertently turned into a controversy due to circulation of video and a menu on the social media. The controversy escalated to the extent that the CM had to give a clarification in the matter.
