Himachal Govt Cuts Super Luxury Bus Fares by 15%

The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) Board of Directors, in a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, approved major reforms aimed at improving efficiency, passenger convenience, and revenue generation. A key decision includes a 15% fare reduction for super luxury buses operating within Himachal, to counter competition from the private sector. Additionally, passengers using the new “Him Bus Plus” card will get an extra 5% discount, making the total concession 20%, along with loyalty cashback benefits.
The BOD also launched four new IT-based modules to enhance HRTC’s operations. One major reform is the rollout of an online system for issuing concessional travel passes to students, government employees, and traders. These passes, previously issued manually, will now be available digitally with payment and application submission made online. RFID-based smart cards will replace the paper passes.
Real-time GPS tracking of buses has begun with a pilot in Shimla, covering 82 buses. This will gradually be extended across the state. An inspection schedule system has also been digitized to improve vehicle monitoring and staff accountability.
The board approved the installation of CCTV cameras at all bus terminals and sanctioned ₹7 crore for maintenance and modernization of bus stands. A modern bus terminal will be constructed at Mandi Bharari (Bilaspur).
HRTC will also implement a dhaba policy to ensure food safety for passengers. Retail fuel outlets on HRTC properties and a “Tourist Day Circuit” service from Shimla to nearby tourist and religious sites have also been approved.
HRTC staff uniforms will change from grey to khaki. Employees will receive cash in lieu of uniforms until the tender process is completed within a month.
The meeting emphasized swift preparation for electric buses, including setting up e-charging stations.
