BJP MLA Sudhir Sharma moves privilege motion against Himachal CM over ‘False job, health claims’

The monsoon session turned stormy on Monday as BJP MLA Sudhir Sharma submitted a privilege motion against Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, accusing him of repeatedly making “false, contradictory and misleading statements” on crucial policy issues ranging from employment to disaster relief.

In his three-page submission to the Speaker, Sharma sought the motion to be referred to the Privilege Committee, listing seven instances where, he alleged, the CM’s official statements inside the House and in public do not match government action on the ground.

At the heart of the charge lies what the MLA called a “pattern of conflicting figures” on job creation. Sharma pointed out that in the 2025-26 Budget speech, Sukhu had promised employment for 25,000 youth. In the previous year’s monsoon session, the government claimed 34,000 jobs had already been given in the government sector. Yet, in his Independence Day address this year, the CM cited a figure of 23,000 employed youth. “The highest office cannot afford to give varying numbers on the same subject. This raises serious questions of credibility,” the motion noted.

The privilege notice also catalogues unfulfilled commitments. Sharma alleged that flagship announcements like the Atal Adarsh Swasthya Sansthan have been made repeatedly in every session since the government’s first budget, but not a single such health institution exists in any of the state’s 68 constituencies. Similarly, despite being mentioned thrice in budget speeches, no PET scan machine has been installed in Himachal’s medical institutions.

The MLA further accused the government of making financial promises that have not materialized—such as the release of Dearness Allowance or the so-called “extra one lakh” benefit to targeted beneficiaries. On disaster relief too, the motion claims discrepancies, citing that while the government initially declared Rs 483 crore had been distributed to victims of the 2023 calamity, official records later confirmed only Rs 307 crore was disbursed.

The motion marks an escalation of opposition strategy, moving beyond routine criticism to an institutional challenge that seeks to hold the Chief Minister accountable for consistency and accuracy of his statements. If admitted by the Speaker, the Privilege Committee will examine whether the CM’s varying claims amount to breach of privilege of the House.

With the opposition pressing the government on employment, health infrastructure, disaster management and transparency in public allotments, the coming days of the Assembly session are expected to remain more stormy.
