Shimla, May 21
Severe heatwave conditions continued to grim in Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, with temperatures remaining significantly above normal across most parts of the state. The intense heat spared neither the plains nor the mid-hill regions, making the day unusually uncomfortable even in traditionally cool areas.
According to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, Una remained the hottest place in the state with a blistering maximum temperature of 44.3 degrees Celsius, around six degrees above normal.
The state capital Shimla also recorded a high of 30.5 degrees Celsius, which was 5.1 degrees above the seasonal average.
Bilaspur district too witnessed severe heat conditions, with Neri recording 41 degrees Celsius, reflecting the rapidly intensifying summer across lower and adjoining hill regions.
Several other stations continued to reel under scorching temperatures. Sundernagar recorded 39.9 degrees Celsius, Mandi 38.8 degrees, Nahan 38.7 degrees, Kangra 38.4 degrees, Dharamshala 36 degrees and Solan 36 degrees Celsius. Bhuntar recorded 35.1 degrees while Kalpa in tribal Kinnaur touched 26.5 degrees Celsius.
The weather office stated that average maximum temperatures across Himachal Pradesh remained appreciably above normal, though no large change was observed during the past 24 hours.
The prolonged spell of hot weather has disrupted normal life in many areas, particularly in the plains and lower hills where afternoon streets remained largely deserted. Hospitals have also advised people to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during peak afternoon hours and to consume adequate water to prevent heat-related illnesses.

The dry weather conditions have further increased concerns over depleting water sources and the growing risk of forest fires in several districts. Farmers and orchardists are also worried about the adverse impact of rising temperatures on crops and fruit production.
No significant rainfall was reported from most parts of the state during the day, allowing the heatwave conditions to persist unabated.
