Shimla, Sept 11
A video showing a man being allegedly assaulted in full public view at Shimla’s Ridge has gone viral on social media, triggering concern over law and order in the heart of the state capital.
The incident reportedly took place on Friday, September 11, with the assault occurring at a prominent public place under the surveillance of CCTV cameras.
The footage, showing several persons allegedly beating a man, has attracted widespread attention on social media and raised questions over the safety of residents and tourists in the heavily monitored Mall Road-Ridge area.
Acting swiftly on the matter, Shimla Police arrested all seven persons allegedly involved in the incident. Police said preventive action was taken under relevant provisions of the Himachal Pradesh Police Act, considering the possibility that the accused persons could disturb public order and peace.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that both sides involved in the incident are taxi drivers and that a dispute over a passenger had allegedly been continuing between them. Police are now carrying out further investigation and taking necessary legal action according to law.
The incident assumes significance as the Ridge and Mall Road constitute one of Shimla’s most crowded and sensitive public spaces, frequented by tourists and locals throughout the day. The alleged assault taking place openly in such a location, despite the presence of CCTV surveillance, has sparked concern over whether offenders are being deterred sufficiently in the city’s high-footfall areas.
The incident has also brought renewed focus on enforcement of public-order restrictions in Shimla. Section 144 has remained imposed in the area, making the reported public brawl particularly concerning from the law-and-order perspective.
Police have maintained that the arrests were made promptly to prevent any further escalation between the two groups. Further details regarding the exact sequence of events and the role of each of the seven persons are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
The viral video has meanwhile intensified public scrutiny of security arrangements on Shimla’s Mall Road and Ridge, with questions being raised over how a group assault could take place at such a prominent location and under CCTV surveillance.
