Police arrest man in three jewellery snatching cases
Shimla, October 6
Shimla district police have arrested a 26-year-old man allegedly involved in three separate jewellery snatching incidents targeting women in the Kumarsain area, police said on Tuesday.
The accused, identified as Jail Singh, son of Karan Singh and a resident of Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir, was arrested on October 5 following a coordinated investigation by the Kumarsain police.
The first case was registered on August 31 on the complaint of Seema Devi, who alleged that a man attacked her near Jubbar and fled after snatching her earrings.
A second case was registered on September 14 on the complaint of Suno Devi, who reported that her gold earrings had been snatched while she was on a road near Kandyali.
In the third incident, reported on September 26, Kanku alleged that a man who had visited her dhaba for three consecutive days took advantage of her being alone and fled after snatching her mangalsutra.
Police said investigators noticed striking similarities in the three incidents and examined technical evidence as well as human intelligence to establish a link between them. The investigation indicated that the accused had allegedly conducted reconnaissance of the areas before committing the offences and selected relatively isolated locations.
Police subsequently traced the accused’s location to Nurpur and coordinated with the local police before arresting him. He was brought to Kumarsain police station, where the complainants subsequently identified him, police said.
During the investigation, his previous criminal record also emerged. He is allegedly involved in another snatching case registered at Sihunta police station in Chamba district.
Police said the accused allegedly used a similar trick in all three incidents, throwing chilli powder into the eyes of the women before snatching their jewellery and escaping. The accused will be produced before the court, while further investigation is underway.
