Accused arrested in Zirakpur for swindling Rs 74,000 by switching elderly man’s ATM card

A case involving the fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 74,000 has emerged in Nahan. Anoop Anand Bhatnagar, a resident of Bila Round in the district headquarters, reported to the police that on April 23, while withdrawing money from the main branch of SBI in Nahan, his ATM card was stolen and Rs 74,000 was subsequently withdrawn by the thief.
Upon receiving the complaint, the police established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the leadership of Additional Superintendent of Police Yogesh Rolta. The team scrutinized the CCTV footage from the ATM, which revealed that a young man had stolen the elderly man’s ATM card. Following this lead, the police identified and arrested Nikhil Kumar, a resident of Hamirpur, from Zirakpur, Punjab.
Superintendent of Police Sirmaur, Raman Kumar Meena, confirmed the incident. He noted that Anoop Anand Bhatnagar’s complaint had prompted the formation of the SIT, which quickly honed in on the suspect through meticulous review of the CCTV footage. The accused was apprehended in Zirakpur and was presented in court on Thursday, where he was remanded to police custody for five days.
SP Meena urged the public to exercise caution when using ATMs, advising against leaving cards in machines and emphasizing vigilance regarding those nearby. He also highlighted the growing prevalence of cybercrime, warning against sharing ATM passwords and OTPs with anyone.
The police are continuing their investigation and have reiterated the importance of personal security and awareness to prevent such incidents in the future.
