Shimla, July 28
The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Kinnaur has launched a project to map and survey glacial lakes in the Sangla and Kashang basins to evaluate potential risks to downstream areas.
During a meeting in Reckong Peo, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma revealed that a team from the Central Agency for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) will arrive in Kinnaur on August 1, 2024. They will be joined by personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, home guard, Dogra Scout, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), health department doctors, and other administrative members.
Dr. Sharma stressed that the survey will provide a detailed analysis of these glacial lakes to identify any potential threats to nearby communities. He instructed all relevant departments to ensure the successful execution of this initiative.
Key attendees at the meeting included Superintendent of Police Abhishek S, ITBP Commandant Basant Nogal, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Kalpa (Civil) Dr. Major Shashank Gupta, Commander Home Defense Pankaj Sharma, District Program Officer for Health Dr. Anvesha Negi, and representatives from the District Disaster Management, Kuldeep Singh and Narendra Kayth, along with other officers.
