Advisories for farmers as Himachal Pradesh braces for severe weather conditions

With Himachal Pradesh set to experience heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and landslides in the coming days, farmers across the state are advised to take necessary precautions to protect their crops and livestock. The Integrated Agromet Advisory Services has issued specific advisories based on the forecasted weather conditions for different districts and crops.
Mandi District
Paddy (Transplanting Stage): Farmers are advised to avoid transplanting in case of very heavy rainfall.
Maize (Vegetative/Kneehigh Stage): Stagnation of water in the field may occur, so it is crucial to create proper drainage channels. Regularly inspect crops for fall armyworm.
Solan District
Apple (Fruiting Stage): Keep a close watch on apple scab and follow the scheduled spraying of insecticides and pesticides. Avoid any spray or fertilizer application during the forecasted rains. Perform necessary operations when the sky remains clear.
Tomato (Fruiting Stage): Heavy rainfall may lead to stem breakage, flower and fruit loss, and increased disease incidence. Remove damaged fruits, stake the plants, maintain proper drainage channels, and harvest fruits in a timely manner. Follow recommended sprays to control bacterial wilt and blight diseases.

Kullu District
Apple (Fruit Development Stage): Ensure proper drainage in the fields to prevent waterlogging/stagnation. Avoid irrigation and chemical sprays during heavy rainfall. Monitor fruit plants for bacterial and fungal diseases.
Cucurbitaceous Crops (Cucumber, Bottle Gourd, Bitter Gourd, Pumpkin): Expect loss of flowers, fruit dropping, and rotting due to waterlogged conditions. Stack the crops for protection against soil-borne diseases and maintain adequate drainage channels. Observe pest and disease attacks and avoid irrigation and chemical sprays during heavy rainfall.
These advisories are intended to guide farmers in mitigating the potential damage caused by the severe weather conditions. It is important to monitor the weather closely and adjust farming practices accordingly. Farmers are encouraged to maintain proper drainage channels, conduct regular inspections of crops, and take necessary measures to protect their livestock and bee colonies.
Livestock: Farmers are advised to prevent water stagnation around cattle sheds and ensure proper hygiene within the sheds. Vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) should be administered. Similar precautions should be taken for bee colonies, ensuring protection from rainwater and maintaining cleanliness.
The natural farming community is encouraged to use mulch to prevent soil and root damage during moderate to heavy rainfall. Farmers practicing natural farming may follow the suggested management practices, while other farmers should refer to the recommended package of practices.
It is crucial for farmers to stay informed, monitor weather updates, and prioritize safety measures to protect their agricultural endeavours, stated the special advisory.
