The onset of the monsoon season, Shimla Jal Prabhandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) has issued a crucial advisory regarding the water supply in Shimla.
The monsoon brings with it an increased risk of waterborne diseases such as jaundice, cholera, and other gastrointestinal illnesses.
To combat this, SJPNL emphasizes the importance of consuming only boiled or filtered water during this period.
The advisory highlights that turbidity in water sources significantly increases during the rainy season.
While turbidity itself does not directly affect health, it can interfere with disinfection processes, allowing harmful microbes—including bacteria, viruses, and parasites—to proliferate.
As a precaution, SJPNL advises all residents to boil their water for at least 10 minutes before consumption.
Due to the heavy rainfall and subsequent rise in silt levels in storage tanks and water sources, the regular water supply may become contaminated.
The SJPNL spokesperson has reassured the public that all necessary precautions are being taken to mitigate this issue.
 However, given the volume of water supply and the challenges in treating the entire supply, residents are urged to take personal precautions by boiling and filtering their water.
The advisory notes that the first spell of monsoon rains typically causes a significant increase in silt levels, making it difficult to ensure fully treated water.
Therefore, until the silt levels subside, it is crucial for residents to take extra care to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases.
SJPNL’s advisory serves as a vital reminder for the residents of Shimla to be vigilant about their water consumption practices during the monsoon season.
By adhering to these guidelines, the community can help prevent the spread of diseases and ensure the health and safety of all residents.
