‘AI’ employed by HP Traffic police for regulating vehicular traffic

To keep a watch on vehicular traffic and violation of rules, the State police traffic unit is employing the eagle eye of artificial intelligence in the state.
According to a press release issued by the State police headquarter, around one lakh challans were issued for violation of motor vehicle rules through Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras in the current year 2023.
Currently 49 ITMS cameras have been installed at selected places on National highways and State roads all over Himachal Pradesh.
In the current year, a total of 104268 challans have been issued for violations under the Vehicle Act by these Artificial Intelligence cameras without human intervention, claimed the press communique. There has been an increase in the challans made through ITMS since last one month.
The AI cameras are powered by electricity, and are using 4G LTE technology to send data to the control room.
Initially the AI cameras will detect violations like riding a two-wheeler without helmet, traveling without a seat belt, traveling with more than two people on a two-wheeler, using mobile phone while driving and red light violations. “
The “fully automated traffic enforcement system” will inform the vehicle owner about the traffic violation through e-mail and mobile phone SMS within 24 hours of the alleged offence.
The traffic challan would contain photographic evidence, time and place of the violation. The fine ranges from Rs 500 to Rs 2,000. One system could store up to three months of video footage.
