Shimla, May 3,
In a key leadership development in India’s power sector, the Ministry of Power has appointed Bhupendra Gupta, currently Director (Technical) at THDC India Limited, as the interim Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL). The official order, issued on May 2, 2025, confirms Gupta’s appointment with effect from May 1, 2025, for a period of three months or until a regular CMD is selected, whichever is earlier.
This strategic interim assignment awaits final clearance from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and comes at a pivotal time for SJVNL, a leading public sector hydropower and renewable energy company headquartered in Shimla. The PSU is currently driving major hydro and solar power initiatives in India and abroad, contributing significantly to the country’s clean energy transition goals.
The Ministry’s notification, signed by Director Santosh Kumar, has been formally circulated to senior stakeholders, including the CMD of NHPC Ltd., SJVNL board members, the Chief Secretary of Himachal Pradesh, and senior officials across relevant departments of the Government of India.
Industry insiders see Gupta’s temporary elevation as a move to ensure continuity in the company’s strategic direction. With an extensive track record in technical leadership at THDCIL, Gupta is expected to uphold SJVNL’s operational momentum, especially in light of its ongoing expansion in the hydro, solar, and wind sectors.
