Shimla, Sept 25,
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is set to transform rural telecommunication services in Himachal Pradesh by switching over to high-speed optical fiber networks and expanding connectivity to remote areas.
Under its ambitious drive, BSNL has connected 498 locations in the state and will provide broadband access to 3,615 Gram Panchayats through optical fiber. This step is expected to revolutionize online education, healthcare, employment, e-governance, and business opportunities in far-flung villages of the hill state. Plans are also underway to extend the service to more than 15,000 villages in the near future.
BSNL officials stated that the new infrastructure will help bridge the digital divide in rural Himachal Pradesh, bringing high-speed mobile and internet services to areas that were previously outside the coverage of reliable connectivity. The expansion is designed not only to facilitate daily communication but also to support disaster management and emergency operations, particularly in flood- and landslide-prone regions.
The company is also focusing on strengthening public awareness and protection against cyber fraud. BSNL has integrated Financial Risk Indicators (FRIs) into its systems, enabling banks and institutions to identify risky numbers and prevent fraudulent transactions before they occur. Alongside, a Digital Intelligence Platform has been developed to share information about suspicious activities and consumers with relevant stakeholders.

To ensure public confidence, BSNL clarified that its mobile towers adhere to emission standards that are twice as strict as global norms, with periodic tests confirming safety. Awareness drives are also being held across schools, colleges, and community centers to dispel myths about electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation.
In addition, initiatives like Sanchar Mitra are being implemented, where engineering students are connected with BSNL to spread awareness about telecom services and government programs. This year, 31 Sanchar Mitras from Himachal Pradesh engineering colleges have been chosen to play a key role in this outreach.
BSNL has also demonstrated resilience during natural calamities. During the recent monsoon disasters in Mandi, Chamba, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti, the company ensured uninterrupted service by activating intra-circle roaming (ICR). This allowed subscribers to stay connected by using alternative networks when their own provider’s service was disrupted, ensuring relief operations and emergency communication remained unhindered.
With the adoption of high-speed optical fiber networks and a focus on rural telephony, BSNL is not only modernizing its infrastructure but also laying a strong foundation for digital empowerment across Himachal Pradesh.
