Anni/Shimla, Nov 26,
A couple from the Batala Valley area of Karsog subdivision is feared to have drowned after reportedly jumping into the Sutlej river near Luhri on Wednesday morning, prompting a large-scale rescue operation along the turbulent stretch.
Police have identified the missing individuals as Dooni Chand (35), son of Baldev Chand, and his wife Sonia (27). According to officials, an alert was received around mid-morning that the two had leapt into the river from a spot close to Luhari. A police team rushed to the site and began coordinating search efforts along both banks.
Rescue personnel, assisted by local volunteers, have been scanning the downstream belt for several kilometres. However, no trace of the couple had been found till the time of filing this report.
Preliminary information indicates that Dooni Chand worked at a hair salon in Anni town under the Anni Assembly constituency, where he lived with his family. The circumstances that may have led to the couple’s suspected suicide attempt remain uncertain, and police are now examining personal details, interactions, and recent events to determine what may have triggered the incident.
Family members have been informed, and authorities have intensified the operation with divers and additional manpower, given the Sutlej’s strong current and deep channels in the area.
The incident has caused widespread concern across the region, with rescue teams continuing round-the-clock efforts to locate the missing couple.
