Shimla, July 23
The case of the bomb threat to the Himachal Pradesh High Court has been transferred to the cyber cell for further investigation. This move comes after the district police determined that the technical complexities of the case necessitate expertise in cybercrime.
On June 17, 2024, an email was sent to the High Court under the name of KNR Group, threatening to bomb the premises. The email claimed multiple explosives were planted within the High Court. The threat immediately activated all security protocols, with the district police, dog squad, and bomb squad conducting an exhaustive search of the building. Thankfully, the investigation found no bombs, and the threat was deemed a hoax. However, this incident wasn’t isolated; similar threats were reported in various government institutions across the country.
Despite the immediate safety of the High Court, the ramifications of such threats are severe. Recently, the High Court had to adjourn a hearing mid-session after receiving another hoax email threatening an explosion. The disruption caused by these threats highlights the urgent need to identify and apprehend the perpetrator to prevent future incidents.
After a month-long investigation, state police decided to transfer the case to the cyber cell, hoping their specialized skills in cyber forensics will uncover the origin of the threatening emails. The cyber cell’s expertise is crucial in tracking the digital footprints left by the sender, which can often be masked through sophisticated techniques.
As the investigation progresses, the judiciary and law enforcement agencies remain on high alert. The safety of judicial premises is paramount, and every effort is being made to ensure such threats are swiftly addressed and the culprits brought to justice.
The collaboration between district police and cyber experts underscore the seriousness with which authorities are treating these threats, aiming to safeguard the integrity and security of the judicial process in Himachal Pradesh.
