Shimla, Jan 5
The long-standing legal battle over the iconic Wildflower Hall, located near Shimla, continues as negotiations between the Himachal Pradesh Government and the Oberoi Group fail to reach a consensus. Despite efforts to resolve the matter, no agreement has been reached, prompting the government to explore alternative management strategies.
The case, under legal scrutiny for two decades, took a new turn during recent proceedings before the Himachal Pradesh High Court. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi represented the Oberoi Group via video conferencing in a hearing presided over by Justice Jyotsna Rewal Dua.

Advocate General Anup Rattan stated that the State government is open to discussions if the Oberoi Group, operating under East India Hotels Limited, submits a concrete proposal. However, no proposal has been received so far.
Previously, the High Court directed the Oberoi Group to transfer the management of Wildflower Hall to the State government. The Supreme Court upheld this decision, denying relief to the hospitality group. Subsequently, the government filed an execution petition in the High Court to enforce control over the property.

With the Oberoi Group reportedly failing to adhere to arbitration directives, the government, which had deposited ₹120 crore as per court orders, may have now decided to invite bids to transfer the property’s management to a competent hospitality firm. Advocate General Rattan confirmed that a transparent tendering process would allow leading firms to manage the property professionally, enhancing its tourism potential.
Wildflower Hall, a heritage landmark, holds immense value in promoting tourism in Himachal Pradesh. The upcoming bidding process is expected to attract major hospitality players, ensuring efficient management while contributing to the state’s economy.
The next court hearing is scheduled for March. As the deadline approaches, the outcome of the legal proceedings and the government’s tendering initiative will be closely watched.
This decision not only aims to resolve the ownership dispute but also sets a precedent for managing other heritage properties effectively. The Himachal Pradesh Government remains committed to promoting tourism and ensuring the optimal utilization of iconic assets like Wildflower Hall.
