Shimla, July 28,
Significant uranium deposits have been discovered in four districts of Himachal Pradesh—Hamirpur, Una, Shimla, and Mandi—sparking considerable interest and anticipation. Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, and Prime Minister’s Office, disclosed this information in response to a query raised by Member of Parliament Sikandar Kumar during a Rajya Sabha session.
MP Sikandar Kumar sought detailed information about the uranium-rich sites in Hamirpur and Una districts, including the estimated quantity of uranium reserves and the prospects of establishing a uranium treatment plant in the state.
Dr. Jitendra Singh revealed that the Directorate of Atomic Minerals Exploration and Research (DAE), under the Department of Atomic Energy, conducted preliminary inspections in Himachal Pradesh. These inspections uncovered surface uranium deposits in Masanbal, Hamirpur district, and confirmed deposits in Rajpura, Una, Kasha-Kaladi, Shimla, and Taleli, Mandi. The combined uranium oxide reserves from these sites are estimated to be around 784 tonnes: 364 tonnes in Rajpura, 200 tonnes in Kasha-Kaladi, and 220 tonnes in Taleli.
Despite these findings, Dr. Singh noted that no plans have been made yet to establish a uranium treatment plant in the region. However, the discovery of these deposits holds the potential to transform the economic and industrial landscape of Himachal Pradesh, positioning it as a significant player in the nation’s nuclear energy sector.
This critical information was provided during the budget session of the upper house of parliament. In response to a query raised by Himachal Pradesh Rajya Sabha MP and former Vice Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University during zero hours, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh confirmed the state possesses around 784 tonnes of uranium oxide ore, essential for thermal plants and the development of nuclear explosives.
As the nation looks forward to harnessing these valuable natural resources, the government faces important decisions regarding the extraction and utilization of these uranium deposits. While immediate plans do not include extraction and processing for thermal nuclear plants, the future prospects are vast and promising. This discovery could pave the way for new economic opportunities, technological advancements, and enhanced energy security for India.
The people of Himachal Pradesh, particularly those in the uranium-rich districts, stand at the cusp of a new era. The careful and sustainable development of these resources will be essential to ensure that the benefits reach local communities while preserving the natural environment. As the government deliberates on the next steps, the potential for growth and progress in Himachal Pradesh is immense, driven by the newfound wealth beneath its soil.
