Doctors Call Off strike after CM assures review of termination order

After two days of widespread hardship for patients across Himachal Pradesh, the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) at IGMC Shimla has withdrawn its indefinite strike with immediate effect. The breakthrough came following assurances from Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to initiate a detailed inquiry into the alleged assault incident at IGMC and to reconsider the termination of Senior Resident Dr. Raghav Narula.
In its official press note, the RDA said it “believes in the word of the Honorable Chief Minister” and has called off the strike “in larger public interest.” The association underlined that it will closely follow the inquiry process and will convene on January 3, 2026, to decide further action if the termination order is not revoked by then.
The strike had severely disrupted healthcare services across the state, halting OPDs and causing postponement of surgeries in major hospitals including IGMC Shimla, Dr. RPGMC Tanda, and other institutions. Patients traveling long distances from rural areas faced significant difficulties as the dispute escalated over the weekend.
The association has extended its “heartfelt thanks” to resident doctors from across the state and the country for solidarity during the agitation. It also acknowledged the support from the Himachal Medical Officers’ Association, SAMDCOT, and medical teachers’ bodies in the state.
With services set to resume, immediate relief is expected for thousands of patients who were left in limbo due to the confrontation between the medical community and the state government.
Even as normalcy returns, the situation remains sensitive — with doctors placing their trust in the government’s assurances while keeping future action open depending on the inquiry’s outcome.
