Electricity Board imposes ‘One rupee per unit’ levy on Commercial establishments
Shimla, May 15
Himachal Pradesh government has imposed a new electricity cess of Re 1 per unit on several commercial establishments across the state with immediate effect.
A notification issued by the Department of MPP and Power recently under Section 3-B of the Himachal Pradesh Electricity (Duty) Act, 2009 confirmed that a cess would apply to business houses, private offices, private hospitals, petrol pumps, hotels and motels, private nursing homes, private research institutions, private coaching institutes, shopping malls and multiplexes.
The government has directed HPSEBL to collect the cess from consumers under the newly added categories at the prescribed rate.
Officials said the decision was taken in public interest and is aimed at generating additional revenue for the state.

The move is expected to increase electricity bills for commercial consumers, especially hotels, hospitals, malls and other high-power users.
The notification, issued on May 8 by Secretary (MPP and Power) Rakesh Kanwar, has been circulated to senior government departments and power sector agencies for implementation.
The decision comes amid the state government’s efforts to strengthen revenue resources while dealing with financial pressure. Commercial establishments across Himachal Pradesh are likely to feel the impact in the coming billing cycle.
