Recent weather patterns in Himachal Pradesh have brought unexpected twists despite initial forecasts. While an orange alert from the IMD warned of heavy rainfall on June 29 and 30, the actual precipitation has been sporadic. Shimla and Solan have seen above-average rainfall, with Shimla recording 56.8 mm (68% above normal) and Solan receiving 58.4 mm (20% above normal) in the past week. However, Chamba district received significantly less rainfall, 68% below its usual amount.
Overall, from June 23 to 30, the state received 23.4 mm of rain, which is 32% below the average. For the entire month of June, Himachal Pradesh experienced a 49% deficit in rainfall compared to normal levels. Despite these challenges, the IMD anticipates continuous rainfall until July 6, issuing orange alerts for heavy rain in several districts, including Hamirpur, Solan, and Sirmaur.
Looking ahead, a yellow alert is in place from July 3 to 6, coinciding with the expected activation of a western disturbance alongside the monsoon on July 6 and 7. This weather system could potentially bring more substantial rainfall to the region.
Since the onset of the monsoon on June 27, the state has faced significant challenges, including property damage amounting to Rs 58.83 lakh and casualties. Thirteen fatalities, 26 injuries, and one missing person have been reported due to various incidents during this period.
The erratic nature of this year’s monsoon underscores its unpredictability, with notable rainfall disparities across different districts.
