Prominent farmer leaders have voiced their support for suspended CISF jawan Kulwinder Kaur, following her alleged altercation with actor and MP Kangna Ranaut on Thursday. The incident, which involved Kaur reportedly slapping Ranaut, has stirred significant public and political reactions.
In a video statement, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait expressed solidarity with Kaur, referring to her as a ‘daughter’. Tikait criticized Ranaut for her past comments about farmers, which he believes provoked the incident. He called for a thorough investigation and suggested that Kaur should be granted bail, emphasizing the widespread frustration among both farmers and security personnel.
Similarly, Sarvan Singh Pandher, another farmer leader, condemned Kaur’s arrest, attributing her actions to deeply hurt sentiments caused by Ranaut’s previous remarks. He argued that the arrest was unjustified.
On Friday, the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Doaba) announced plans to honor Kulwinder Kaur. BKU (Doaba) President Manjit Singh Rai and General Secretary Satnam Singh Sahni lauded Kaur’s actions, appreciating her response as a native of Sultanpur Lodhi Sub Division. They criticized the government for detaining Kaur without a thorough investigation and warned of potential protests if the government continues to favor celebrities over addressing farmer grievances.
Kulwant Singh Sandhu, president of the Jamhuri Kisan Sabha Punjab, also questioned the government’s response. He noted that at the time of the incident, Ranaut had not yet taken her oath of office, suggesting that the legal repercussions for Kaur should be limited to a minor offense under IPC section 323.
This incident has further intensified the ongoing tensions between farmer groups and governmental authorities, reflecting broader discontent within the agricultural community.
