Nahan/Shimla May 25,
Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district was battered by torrential rains on Sunday, triggering widespread chaos as the Giri River surged past the danger mark. Authorities were forced to initiate emergency floodgate operations at the Jataun Barrage twice to manage the rapidly swelling waters, while multiple landslides brought vehicular movement to a standstill across the Nahan division.
The relentless downpour, lasting an estimated six to seven hours, led to a dramatic and sudden rise in the Giri River’s water level. Barrage official Dinesh Kumar promptly alerted the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), reporting the critical situation and the subsequent opening of floodgates. At 5:20 AM, Gate No. 4 was opened, followed swiftly by Gates No. 3 and 4 at 5:28 AM, prompting an immediate flood warning for communities residing along the riverbanks.
The severe weather also unleashed a series of destructive landslides, rendering several vital roads in the Nahan division impassable. Alok Javneja, Superintending Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD), confirmed that key arteries including the Banog-Surla, Rama Dhaun, Banethi-Bagthan, Dadahu-Becharabagh, and Kamalahad roads were completely blocked. PWD teams have already commenced restoration efforts, with expectations to reopen all affected routes by Sunday afternoon.
Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Verma has issued a strong public appeal, urging residents to exercise extreme caution and avoid venturing near swollen rivers and streams. She has also called upon village panchayat heads and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to actively participate in disseminating crucial awareness in vulnerable areas.
While thankfully no casualties have been reported thus far, the sudden weather fury has severely disrupted normal life in the district. The Sirmaur district administration is maintaining a vigilant watch, continuously monitoring the evolving situation and coordinating relief efforts.
