Shimla, June 29,
Himachal Pradesh is bracing for a severe monsoon onslaught over the next week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rain and issuing multiple alerts, including a Red Warning for today. According to the latest release from the Meteorological Centre Shimla, intense rainfall activity triggered by a persistent low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, a deep cyclonic circulation over Haryana, and the active monsoon trough is expected to lash the state from June 29 to July 5.

Today and tomorrow are likely to witness the peak intensity of this wet spell, with extremely heavy downpours forecast in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur and Solan. The IMD has flagged these areas under a Red and Orange alert, warning of potential flash floods, localised landslides, waterlogging in low-lying zones, and disruption to essential services including roads, electricity, and communication. The alert extends through July 3, with varying degrees of risk to other parts of the state including Kullu and Chamba.
The Department has cautioned against venturing near riverbanks and low-lying areas prone to flooding, urging residents and tourists to follow local advisories. Visibility is expected to deteriorate, particularly during thunderstorms, increasing the likelihood of road accidents due to slippery conditions and poor line of sight. Partial damage to huts and vulnerable structures is also possible.
“People must stay indoors during thunderstorm activity and avoid traveling unless necessary. Local authorities should remain on high alert,” the IMD noted, emphasizing that landslide-prone areas may see heightened risk in this period due to already saturated soil conditions.
This warning comes at a critical time as the monsoon’s arrival in Himachal is coinciding with increased tourist movement and pilgrimage season, raising concerns over crowd safety and logistical preparedness. With the weather systems intensifying and slow-moving, the state may experience prolonged bouts of rain that could further strain infrastructure.
Citizens have been advised to keep updated with official IMD channels and avoid spreading unverified information on social media. For live updates and weather warnings, visit mausam.imd.gov.in/shimla or follow Himachalscape news.
