Shimla, June 3,
Himachal Pradesh is in for some big changes in its politics. Some politicians, have left their jobs, and now some areas of the State might need to vote for new ones. This all started because some politicians voted differently than they were supposed to in a Rajya Sabha poll in February.
Experts say we could have three to five more elections soon. This comes after Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania accepted the resignations of three independent MLAs from the Dehra, Hamirpur, and Nalagarh constituencies on Monday.
Political pundits believe that adding to the list, two more seats hang in the balance, with Congress MLAs Vikramaditya Singh and Vinod Sultanpuri poised to step down should they emerge victorious in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Results for the same are expected June 4.
Despite the tumult, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu remains steadfast in his confidence in Congress’s performance, particularly in the two Lok sabha constituencies. He also highlighted that the party is posing a strong challenge to BJP in Kangra and Hamirpur.
On the other hand, the shrinking numbers in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, now reduced to 59 members following the disqualification of six MLAs and the resignation of three. With Congress holding 34 seats and the BJP trailing at 25, the upcoming by-elections hold the potential to significantly alter the balance of power.
The impending by-elections are poised to introduce a minimum of six new members to the assembly, potentially rising to nine, each with a tenure extending approximately three years and six months.
Himachal Pradesh, traditionally insulated from such political upheavals, now finds itself grappling with unprecedented uncertainty. People are worried that all this could make things unstable.
