In a bid to strengthen climate risk management, the Himachal Pradesh government has partnered with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to establish 48 new automatic weather stations across the state. The initiative aims to enhance real-time data collection, improve forecasting accuracy, and bolster disaster preparedness, particularly in agriculture and horticulture sectors.

Currently, 22 automatic weather stations are operational. The expansion of this network to the block level will significantly improve the state’s ability to manage natural disasters such as excessive rainfall, flash floods, snowfall, and cloudbursts.
To support this initiative, the state government has secured Rs. 890 crore from Agence Française de Development (AFD) for a comprehensive climate risk reduction project. This project will focus on strengthening disaster management infrastructure, governance, and institutional capacity.
Key components include bolstering the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), Expanding emergency response capabilities and establishing new fire stations, Creating bioengineering nurseries for landslide mitigation, Developing earthquake-resistant infrastructure, Enhancing connectivity through an improved satellite network and Establishing a state institute for disaster management and a new State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) company.
With these measures, Himachal Pradesh is taking significant steps to build a more resilient disaster management framework and protect its citizens from the impacts of climate change.
