Shimla, June 18
Himachal Pradesh continues to endure severe heatwave and drought-like conditions despite some rainfall in the past 24 hours. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, areas in Kullu, Kangra, Lahaul Spiti, and Mandi experienced rain showers, yet these did not significantly alleviate the heatwave conditions prevailing in the state.
Over the past 24 hours, the state saw isolated showers with significant rainfall recorded in Bajura (16.0 mm), Mandi (14.9 mm), Slapper (12.0 mm), and Dharamshala (11.2 mm). Gusty winds were also reported in several areas, with Bilaspur recording winds at 64.82 km/h and Hamirpur at 62.96 km/h. Thunderstorms with lightning were observed in Jot, Sundernagar, Bhuntar, Kangra, and Palampur, and hail in Jot.
The heatwave remains relentless, with the highest maximum temperature recorded in Una at 44.0°C, followed by Bilaspur at 42.9°C, and Hamirpur at 41.9°C. The minimum temperatures at many stations are above normal, contributing to the prolonged heat stress. For instance, Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 21.0°C, 4.8°C above normal, while Una’s minimum was 25.4°C, 4.4°C above normal.

Forecasts indicate continued heatwave conditions over the next few days, with isolated thunderstorms and lightning expected in various parts of the state. The Western Disturbance currently influencing the region is expected to bring scattered rainfall, but this will likely provide only temporary relief from the heat.
The weather department has issued warnings for severe heatwave conditions in several areas. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are urging the public to take necessary precautions during this period of extreme weather.
