August 2025 was a month of significant and widespread rainfall across Himachal Pradesh, making it the ninth highest August rainfall since 1901 (in the past 125 years). It also represents the highest August rainfall since 1949, though it falls short of the all-time record of 542.4 mm set in 1927.
The state’s total rainfall for the month was 431.3 mm, which was 68% above the normal average. This made it the Throughout August, the region experienced widespread precipitation with normal to active rainfall on many days, with “vigorous” activity on August 25th and 26th.
Regarding individual districts, the rainfall was varied. Kangra received the highest precipitation amount at 816.2 mm, while Lahaul-Spiti received the lowest at 129.7 mm. Kullu district had the highest positive rainfall departure at 165% above normal, while Lahaul-Spiti had the lowest departure at 10% above normal. Bilaspur, Chamba, Kinnaur, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Una all received a large excess of precipitation. Districts with excess precipitation were Hamirpur, Kangra, and Sirmaur, and Lahaul-Spiti received normal precipitation.
Looking ahead to September 2025, the India Meteorological Department’s forecast suggests that normal to above-normal rainfall is likely over most parts of the state. The mean maximum temperatures are expected to be normal to above normal over many parts of the mid and high hills, but below normal over many parts of the low hills, plains, and adjoining mid-hills. Mean minimum temperatures are likely to be normal to above normal across many parts of Himachal Pradesh during the month.
