Shimla, June 22
In a significant development, during the 53rd GST Council meeting held in Delhi today, the council recommended a reduction in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on all types of carton boxes from 18% to 12%. This decision, aimed at cost-saving for both horticulturists and industries, is seen as a major victory for the persistent efforts of Himachal Pradesh.
For some time, Himachal Pradesh had been advocating for a reduction in the GST on apple carton boxes, which are crucial for the state’s thriving apple industry. Harshwardhan Chauhan, the Industry Minister representing Himachal Pradesh, expressed his gratitude to the council for the unanimous decision to adopt the state’s proposal. He highlighted that this reduction will significantly lower the working capital costs for the industry, thereby providing much-needed relief to horticulturists and related businesses.
Chauhan emphasized the broader impact of this decision, stating, “The reduction in GST on carton boxes will not only benefit apple growers in Himachal Pradesh but will also have positive implications for the packaging industry across various sectors. This move will streamline costs and improve the financial viability of many businesses dependent on carton packaging.”
The state’s delegation, which included Dr. Yunus and Rakesh Sharma, Additional Commissioners (GST), actively participated in the council meeting, underscoring the state’s commitment to addressing the financial challenges faced by its agricultural sector. Their advocacy was pivotal in achieving this favorable outcome.
Moreover, the Himachal Pradesh government raised the critical issue of reducing GST charges on agricultural appliances and packaging materials during the council meeting. This broader agenda reflects the state’s dedication to supporting its agricultural community and ensuring the sustainability of its primary industries.
The council’s decisions today also focused on easing the compliance burden and addressing the grievances of small and medium taxpayers, which aligns with Himachal Pradesh’s objectives of fostering a business-friendly environment.
Overall, the reduction in GST on carton boxes marks a significant milestone for Himachal Pradesh, demonstrating the power of persistent advocacy and collaborative governance in achieving economic relief for the state’s key industries.
