Shimla/Dharamshala, Feb 14,
In a move reflecting India’s commitment to the security of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, the Union Home Ministry has granted him Z-category security cover by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The decision follows an intelligence assessment that flagged potential threats to the 89-year-old leader, who has been residing in Dharamshala since fleeing Tibet in 1959.

Effective immediately, the new security arrangement replaces the previous protection provided by Himachal Pradesh Police and local forces. Around 30 CRPF commandos will now work in shifts to ensure his safety across India. The decision comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions surrounding Tibet and growing concerns over his security.
Security around the Dalai Lama has been a matter of concern in recent years, with multiple incidents of security breaches prompting stricter measures. Visitors must now go through rigorous security checks and are only allowed to meet him after obtaining identity verification, including Aadhaar cards. No one is permitted to approach the Tibetan leader without clearance from security agencies.
The move to deploy CRPF personnel, instead of relying on state police, has raised some questions. While the Centre’s decision underscores the Dalai Lama’s security as a National priority, some believe it reflects a lack of trust in state forces. Himachal Pradesh Police, with a track record of diligence and integrity, has been providing security to the leader for decades.
Despite these changes, the Dalai Lama continues to advocate for peace and non-violence. His followers remain hopeful that the new security measures will not hinder his accessibility and teachings, which inspire millions worldwide.
