HP Govt to probe rigging in smart city projects, members asked to submit complaints in writing
Shimla, Sept 22
Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu has assured the state assembly that allegations of irregularities and misuse of public funds in the Shimla Smart City Project will be thoroughly investigated.
In response to a question posed by MLA Sudhir Sharma, Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized the importance of members submitting written complaints regarding the alleged rigging in the Smart City Project. As the minister in charge of the Urban Development department, he pledged to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
Highlighting that Sudhir Sharma had previously overseen the same department and was familiar with the project’s history, Sukhu noted that substantial funding had been received from the Central Government under the Dharamshala Smart City Scheme during Sharma’s tenure as the Urban Development minister. As of now, an estimated budget of Rs 500 crore has been allocated from various Central Government schemes under the Dharamshala Smart City initiative, with Rs 490 crore already disbursed. Approximately Rs 396.75 crore of this allocation has been expended.
Sharma pressed for an investigation into the quality of work carried out under the project. In response, the Chief Minister disclosed that construction activities in the Smart City Project had been temporarily suspended due to recent damage to residences caused by heavy rainfall. He also acknowledged that irregularities had been identified in the project’s execution. However, Sukhu assured that if MLAs provided specific information about these irregularities, he would conduct a comprehensive inquiry before initiating any probes.
Additionally, Shimla MLA Harish Janartha raised concerns about the Shimla Smart City Project, inquiring about the cancellation of numerous works and the allocation of funds. He also highlighted the improper disposal of landslide debris into drainage systems, leading to clogs.
Janartha sought assurance from the government that future technical work on the project would require approval from qualified technical experts and not non-technical personnel.
In light of these developments, the Himachal Pradesh Government appears committed to addressing the alleged irregularities and ensuring transparency and accountability in the Smart City Project. Members of the assembly have been encouraged to formally submit their complaints in writing to facilitate the investigation process.
