Shimla, Aug 26,
Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla has been awarded the prestigious B.R. Ambedkar Grant for Legal Aid and Awareness under the Vidhi Vimarsh initiative, marking a historic achievement for the institution. The fund, conferred on only a select group of law schools out of more than 30 across the country, recognizes HPNLU’s outstanding contribution to legal education and community outreach.
The grant, named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar – architect of the Indian Constitution – aims to strengthen legal aid systems in law institutions, foster a culture of accessible justice, and empower marginalized sections of society. It supports initiatives such as enhancing legal aid clinics, running awareness campaigns in both rural and urban areas, and developing innovative models for legal literacy.

HPNLU’s selection is being credited to the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Preeti Saxena and the efforts of Dr. Chandreshwari Minhas, Chairperson of the Legal Aid Clinic. Over the years, the university has expanded its role from classroom-based teaching to practical interventions in community engagement and judicial awareness, making law more accessible to people at the grassroots level.
“With this support, the university plans to organize wider community engagement programs, link students with socially useful legal projects, and advance Dr. Ambedkar’s vision of social justice and inclusiveness,” said an official statement from the institution.
HPNLU also expressed its gratitude to the organizers of the Vidhi Vimarsh initiative, affirming its resolve to promote legal empowerment and justice beyond the classroom. The university views the grant as both recognition and responsibility to continue championing legal aid and awareness across Himachal Pradesh and beyond.
