Shimla, Sept 14,
The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has announced the immediate discontinuation of discounts on room rent and food for defense personnel and accredited media persons in the state. This move comes as part of HPTDC’s austerity measures aimed at curbing financial losses.
According to an official order issued by Managing Director Rajiv Kumar on September 13, 2024, discounts previously provided to officers and officials of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as ex-servicemen who are domiciled residents of Himachal Pradesh, will no longer be applicable. Accredited journalists, who were also eligible for these benefits while staying in HPTDC hotels, have been included in the withdrawal of this concession.
The discounts had been offered through an earlier order issued on March 13, 2024, and a subsequent corrigendum dated March 25, 2024. However, citing the “present financial position” of the corporation, HPTDC has deemed it necessary to discontinue these benefits. This decision highlights the heavy book value losses the corporation has been enduring, which prompted the implementation of austerity measures to address the increasing deficits.
HPTDC, a key player in the state’s tourism sector, has been facing financial challenges due to declining revenues and increased operational costs. With this new policy, it aims to mitigate further losses by tightening expenditure. The order makes it clear that these changes will take effect immediately, reflecting the urgency with which the corporation is addressing its financial situation.
The withdrawal of these concessions is likely to impact the defense personnel and media professionals who have long availed of discounted stays at HPTDC properties. It remains to be seen whether further measures will follow as part of HPTDC’s efforts to stabilize its financial health.
The order has been circulated to all relevant offices, including DDOs, Complex Incharges, and Marketing Offices within and outside Himachal Pradesh, to ensure necessary action is taken.
