The Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) has failed to secure bookings for the Mahakumbh pilgrimage, with most devotees preferring private bus operators over state-run services. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri stated in a press conference that HRTC had not received any formal requests from Uttar Pradesh or Prayagraj administration to facilitate transport for the event.

Agnihotri highlighted that operating long-distance routes to Prayagraj was not feasible for the state government, further justifying HRTC’s absence from the Mahakumbh transportation network. However, he noted that if the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh governments approached them with a proposal, HRTC would consider the request.
This development highlights a missed opportunity for HRTC, which has been striving to enhance revenue and passenger footfall. The Mahakumbh, known for attracting millions of devotees, could have provided a significant boost to the corporation’s financials. The lack of bookings indicates a preference for private operators, raising questions about HRTC’s competitiveness in long-haul services.
Meanwhile, HRTC Managing Director and Himachal Pradesh cadre IAS officer Rohan Thakur has been relieved from his position as he proceeds on central deputation. Under Thakur’s leadership, HRTC witnessed a revenue increase of Rs 70 crore, a landmark achievement in the corporation’s history. Agnihotri acknowledged Thakur’s role in implementing key reforms, including ensuring timely payment of salaries and pensions, and modernizing the fleet with luxury buses.
Adding to the concerns surrounding Mahakumbh transportation, stampedes were reported at Prayagraj and New Delhi Railway Stations as massive crowds gathered to travel for the pilgrimage. The lack of adequate transportation services, including HRTC’s absence from the event, has contributed to overcrowding at major transit points. Authorities are now under pressure to enhance crowd management measures and ensure safer travel for devotees.
Despite these efforts, the inability to secure Mahakumbh bookings reflects broader challenges faced by HRTC in competing with private operators for long-distance travel. While the corporation has made significant strides, the gap in demand for its services in major events like Mahakumbh highlights areas needing further improvement.
HRTC have strong presence of around 3100 buses and daily offer transport services to around 5 lakh passengers and offered best transport services on the national level for many years.
