Shimla, Nov 28,
The management of the Shimla Ice Skating Rink has raised concerns over the increasing challenges in preparing the rink for the upcoming skating season. According to club officials, plastic waste from the nearby marketplace above the rink is spilling over onto the rink’s premises, entering the drainage system, and blocking water flow. This has resulted in water and plastic waste accumulating on the rink’s ground, making it increasingly difficult to get the rink ready for the skating season.
Sudeep Mahajan, Governing body member of the Ice Skating Club, explained, “The waste from the Rivoli Road is directly falling onto the ground, causing the rink’s drainage system to become clogged. As a result, water and plastic waste are collecting on the ground, which is severely hindering our efforts to prepare the rink for skating.”
The Ice Skating Club has urged the Shimla Municipal Corporation to take immediate action to address the issue. They have requested that appropriate measures be implemented to prevent further waste from entering the rink’s drainage system to ensure that the rink can be prepared in time for the season.
” We are also giving a formal application to this effect to the Municipal Commissioner, stated Mahajan. The timely resolution of this issue is crucial to avoid any delays in the much-anticipated ice skating activities at the historic rink, which has been a popular winter destination for over a century.
The first rolling on the ground has taken place today. Now depending on the decreasing temperatures and increase in frost the rink should be ready for freezing in a week or so. So far the weather conditions don’t seem conducive as there is no frosting in the air yet, informed Mahajan.
