Shimla, June 4
Himachal Pradesh’s premier healthcare institution, Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC), Shimla, has achieved a major milestone by successfully performing 55 robotic surgeries within three months of commissioning the facility, recording a 100 per cent success rate.
A special function was organized at IGMC on Tuesday to commemorate the achievement and honour the doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and other members of the robotic surgery team who contributed to the success of the programme.
The robotic surgery facility was formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on March 11, 2026. The service was introduced as part of the state government’s efforts to bring advanced and affordable healthcare facilities closer to the people of Himachal Pradesh.
According to the hospital administration, all 55 procedures conducted through the state-of-the-art robotic surgical system have been successful, demonstrating the effectiveness and precision of the technology in handling complex and critical surgical cases. The achievement is being viewed as a significant step forward in modernizing healthcare services in the state.

The facility was introduced following the successful implementation of robotic surgery services at Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities (AIMSS), Chamiyana. Encouraged by the positive outcomes, the state government extended the technology to IGMC, where dedicated infrastructure and specialized medical teams were put in place.
Hospital authorities said the robotic surgery programme offers world-class treatment at one of the lowest costs in the country, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the state for advanced surgical procedures. This has helped patients save both time and money while receiving quality treatment closer to home.
Medical Superintendent Dr Rahul Rao attributed the success to the collective efforts of doctors, nursing staff, paramedics and the support of the Himachal Pradesh Government. He reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to further strengthening advanced healthcare services and ensuring better treatment facilities for patients across the state.
