IMD Issues alert for Inundation and flash floods in three Himachal districts
Shimla, Aug 19
In a worrisome update, the Indian Meteorological Hydromet Division (IMD) has issued alerts for potential inundation and flash floods in three districts of Himachal Pradesh as the South West Monsoon continues to pose a threat. The districts of Shimla, Sirmaur, and Chamba have been placed on high alert due to a moderate to high risk of flash floods across several watersheds and neighboring areas.
According to a special bulletin released by the IMD’s hydromet division, the incessant rainfall anticipated over the next 24 hours may lead to surface runoff, resulting in inundation (water logging) in fully saturated watersheds and low-lying regions.
The alert was officially raised at 12:00 PM today and will remain in effect from 1:00 PM onwards. Over the next two days, the weather forecast suggests that six districts—namely Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, Bilaspur, and Solan—have been placed on an orange alert, signifying heightened caution. The remaining districts, with the exception of Kinnaur, are under a yellow alert.
The six districts under the orange alert category could experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, potentially leading to significant challenges. On the other hand, the districts under the yellow alert category may experience moderate to heavy rainfall.
As the monsoon continues to make its presence felt, authorities and residents are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of life and property. It is essential to keep a close watch on the weather updates and adhere to the guidelines provided by local authorities.
