The incident occurred around 3:30 PM in the jail’s open area, just outside the barracks. According to sources, the conflict began over a seemingly minor issue — one prisoner standing near a door was asked to step aside by another, leading to a verbal argument that quickly turned physical. The altercation soon involved a third inmate, resulting in a full-blown brawl.
Despite the jail staff’s efforts to break up the fight, the inmates became more aggressive, reportedly banging their heads against the walls and threatening to harm themselves. With tensions rising, the jail administration decided to alert Sadar Nahan Police Station.
A police team, led by ASP Sirmaur Yogesh Rolta, reached the jail promptly and managed to defuse the situation. They also reviewed the CCTV footage capturing the entire incident and have initiated an investigation to determine the root cause of the conflict.
Reports suggest that tensions within the jail have been simmering for a while. It’s believed that certain inmates, including those convicted of serious crimes, engage in power struggles reminiscent of gang rivalries often depicted in popular media. This undercurrent of hostility is seen as a contributing factor to the recent outbursts of violence.
The unrest didn’t end there. On Sunday, two rival groups of inmates reportedly clashed again within Adarsh Karagar Nahan. This latest confrontation involved prisoners from different states, all serving sentences for severe offenses.
Concerns over security and discipline within the facility have grown following these incidents. In response, the jail administration is working closely with law enforcement to identify those responsible and take preventive measures to avoid further disruptions.
