Shimla, Aug 25
IPS officer Rameshwar Singh Thakur has been appointed as the new chairman of the Himachal Public Service Commission. A notification in this regard has been issued by the government. He has been given this assignment for a period of six years from the date he enters the office or until he attains the age of 62 years, stated a notification by Chief Secretary here today.
IPS Rameshwar Singh Thakur, a resident of Jubbarhatti, Shimla, has been awarded the Clark R Bevin Law Enforcement Award, America’s prestigious award. He has served in the Prime Minister’s Special Protection Force, SPG, for nine years. Received the President’s Police Medal in 2016. He retired from the Indian Army as a Captain in 1990 before joining the Police in 1994. He has held the post of DIG in Himachal Police. Presently he is serving as IG Intelligence.
Pertinent to mention that on August 17, the state government had issued a notification to make Dr. Rachna Gupta, a member of the Public Service Commission, the chairman. Along with them, Rakesh Sharma, Rajesh Sharma and OP Sharma were selected as three members. On the basis of the notification issued by the government, Raj Bhavan distributed invitation cards for the swearing-in ceremony on August 18 at 8:30 am.
However, on the night of August 17 itself, reportedly, after the intervention of the BJP High Command and the Prime Minister’s Office, the Raj Bhavan postponed the oath ceremony indefinitely.
On August 18, Dr. Rachna Gupta sent a letter to the Governor through e-mail expressing her inability to become the Chairperson, citing personal reasons. After this, the government sent the file to withdraw the notification.
Now the government has appointed IPS officer Rameshwar Singh Thakur as the commission’s new chairman.
Also, Rakesh Sharma, a retired IAS, Retired Col Rajesh Kumar and Dr Nain Singh, a retired professor, have been notified as members of the commission for a similar period.
