Jairam Thakur privilege motion against CM Sukhu in HP Assembly
Shimla, March 18,
The second phase of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly’s Budget Session turned more confrontational on Tuesday after the BJP moved a privilege motion against Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, accusing him of repeatedly misleading the House and seeking the Speaker’s intervention under Rule 75.
Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur alleging that the Chief Minister had “repeatedly” made misleading statements on the floor of the House moved the motion.
Addressing mediapersons, Thakur said the motion was being submitted under Rule 75 and was being handed over to the Speaker for review and further action. He alleged that the Chief Minister had continued a “tradition” of making incorrect statements in the Assembly even after completing three years in office.
“We spared him in the first year because he was new to the post. But now three years have gone by and this is the fourth Budget being proposed by the Congress-led government. Yet the tradition of lying has not changed,” Thakur said while announcing the move.
The Leader of Opposition, however, did not publicly spell out the individual instances cited in support of the motion. He said the BJP had prepared a list of such alleged misleading statements and was attaching it with the submission for the Speaker’s scrutiny and appropriate action.
The development comes amid intensifying political confrontation in the ongoing Budget Session, with Jai Ram Thakur already attacking the Sukhu government over what he described as unfulfilled promises from the past three Budgets. A report published on March 17 also quoted him as alleging that several announcements remained on paper and had not translated into implementation.
As of now, there was no immediate detailed response available from the Chief Minister’s side on the privilege motion. The matter is expected to depend on the Speaker’s examination of the notice and the material annexed by the Opposition.
