Shimla, June 21,
Indian Railways’ ambitious plan to introduce air-conditioned Vistadome coaches on the iconic Kalka-Shimla narrow-gauge line has hit an unexpected brake. Touted as a heritage-meets-modernity marvel, the coaches have failed to pass key operational tests, forcing authorities to halt their much-anticipated rollout.
Despite being a UNESCO World Heritage site with over 120 years of legacy, the Kalka-Shimla line’s latest technological upgrade is struggling to find steam—literally and figuratively. An inspection led by Northern Railway General Manager Ashok Verma revealed serious flaws in the coaches recently manufactured by the Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala.

From inefficient cooling systems that couldn’t bring down internal temperatures below 25°C to blocked air ducts, faulty emergency features, and incomplete ducting, the Vistadome coaches have sparked more concern than celebration. Instead of ushering in a new era of luxury mountain travel, the prototype units have been deemed unfit for service—at least for now.
“These are innovations without execution. At this point, they’re just expensive baggage,” a railway official remarked candidly, reflecting a growing concern within the department that these glass-roofed coaches may end up as “white elephants” unless immediate technical corrections are made.
The coaches, designed to blend vintage charm with cutting-edge comfort, boast panoramic glass roofs, anti-UV windows, CCTV surveillance, fire alarms, and linear LED lighting. They were expected to revolutionize travel on the scenic Kalka-Shimla route, offering tourists an immersive experience through Himachal’s lush valleys. But technical snags have forced the Railways to pause and reassess.
To complicate matters further, fare structures for these premium coaches are yet to be finalized. While officials have hinted at a higher price point for the experience, no official announcement has been made.
Despite the setback, not all is lost. CCTV systems with 360-degree coverage, linked directly to the guard’s cabin, are being successfully integrated—promising improved safety for future operations.
The Kalka-Shimla line, often referred to as the “toy train” and cherished globally for its colonial-era appeal and dramatic mountain scenery, continues to draw thousands of visitors. From British viceroys to Bollywood blockbusters, the track has seen it all. The introduction of Vistadome AC coaches was seen as the next big leap—a way to enhance luxury without losing legacy.
But until these sleek new companions are ready to match the grandeur of the past, the heritage journey rolls on, untouched by malfunctioning modernity.
