Shimla, Nov 12,
The high-altitude orchards of Kinnaur have once again painted a picture of abundance as the district concludes its 2025 apple season with a total dispatch of 33,53,089 boxes to markets across India. Known for producing some of the finest apples in the world, the region has reaffirmed its premium standing despite a marginal dip from last year’s bumper yield.
According to data from the Horticulture Department, apples from Kinnaur — famed for their natural sweetness, crisp texture, and deep red hue — were transported through 12,671 vehicles to 11 major wholesale markets, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Pinjore, Solan, Shimla, Ratanpur, Bithal, Matiyana, Sainj, and Khegsu.
Among these, Delhi emerged as the top destination receiving over 10 lakh boxes, followed by Mumbai (over 4 lakh) and Bithal (over 4.8 lakh boxes). The apples from Kinnaur continued to fetch premium prices across these mandis, driven by their unique flavor, fragrance, and extended shelf life — qualities often compared to European and American varieties.
Breaking down the district’s production, Pooh block led with 12,29,322 boxes, followed by Nichar (10,96,093 boxes) and Kalpa (10,27,673 boxes).
“With dispatches from Nichar and Kalpa nearly complete and Pooh’s output slowing down, the Chaura apple inspection barrier will officially close on November 15, marking the end of this year’s transport season,” said Dr. Bhupendra Negi, Deputy Director of the Horticulture Department.
The close of the season also signals the beginning of Kinnaur’s winter — a time when the scent of freshly harvested apples lingers across the valleys, symbolizing both hard-earned prosperity and the enduring charm of Himalayan horticulture.
Despite the challenges posed by changing weather patterns and fluctuating market dynamics, Kinnaur’s apple growers have once again upheld the district’s legacy as a benchmark for quality produce. Each harvest not only boosts local livelihoods but also strengthens India’s position in the global fruit trade, with Kinnaur apples continuing to dominate domestic premium fruit segments.
As the season winds down, the story of Kinnaur’s apples remains one of resilience, tradition, and excellence — a true mountain tale that continues to sweeten lives across the nation.
