Leh-Ladakh intrusion into Himachal Border, member raises concern 

Shimla, Sept 21

Member of the Legislative Assembly for Lahaul Spiti, Ravi Thakur, has expressed concern over the encroachment of Leh and Ladakh into the Himachal Pradesh border areas of Shinkula and Sarchu. Thakur has called for increased police presence along the borders to monitor tourist and pilgrimage movements. He has also urged the government to address the border dispute between Leh Ladakh and Lahaul Spiti.

Thakur revealed that Leh-Ladakh has encroached approximately 35 kilometers into Shinkula and 14 kilometers into Sarchu on the Himachal Pradesh border. Education Minister Rohit Thakur, speaking on behalf of the absent Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, assured that the border dispute with Leh-Ladakh would be resolved soon, with a meeting scheduled to include the local MLA.

On the subject of global warming and increased traffic, Rohit Thakur stated that no scientific studies or data confirm Lahaul-Spiti as prone to natural disasters, and there are no proposals for deploying disaster response units or constructing permanent structures at Sarchu and Shunkula borders. The government will consider such proposals if necessary.

Regarding global warming in Lahaul Spiti, Ravi Thakur raised questions about NDRF and SDRF preparedness. He also inquired about the need for a separate police force in Lahaul Spiti due to the increasing daily influx of over 65 thousand people traveling to Ladakh from the district.
