Shimla, Dec 24,
Fear spread across several villages of the Balh Valley in Mandi district early Wednesday after a leopard entered residential areas and launched a series of sudden attacks, resulting in one death and injuries to three others.
The incidents unfolded at daybreak when the wild animal reportedly appeared inside human habitation, triggering panic in Chandyal and Bhadyal villages. According to officials, the leopard attacked villagers in quick succession, leaving three residents injured. All sustained paw-related injuries and were immediately shifted to hospital, where doctors have described their condition as stable.
The situation escalated later when the leopard attacked a 40-year-old migrant worker, Balveer Singh, in Malwana village. Singh, originally from Bhyuli and visiting relatives in the area, suffered critical injuries. He succumbed to his wounds while being rushed for medical treatment, officials confirmed.
Forest Department sources said the leopard appeared unusually aggressive and disoriented. Teams were rushed to the affected villages soon after the first alerts were received. During the chaos, villagers reportedly tried to protect themselves, and the animal was eventually killed. The carcass has been taken into custody and sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the reasons behind its aggressive behaviour.
The local administration has confirmed that immediate relief has been provided to the deceased’s family, while assistance is also being extended to the injured persons. Officials said further compensation would be processed as per established norms.
Following the incident, forest authorities have intensified surveillance in and around the affected villages. Residents have been advised to avoid venturing out alone during early morning and late evening hours, when wildlife movement is more likely. An inquiry is underway to determine how and why the leopard entered densely populated areas, once again highlighting growing human-wildlife conflict in the region.
