Shimla, July 2
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri stated today that the BJP leadership in Himachal Pradesh has failed to topple the Congress government in the state. During a press conference, he remarked that since the Rajya Sabha elections, the BJP has been unable to respond effectively to the political situation.
Agnihotri accused the BJP of using political gimmicks, which have caused internal disagreement among their party members, particularly regarding the push for bye-elections in nine assembly constituencies. He claimed that the BJP leadership’s efforts to destabilize the Congress government have been rejected by grassroots workers and party cadres who are not supporting such plans.
He criticized the BJP for failing to act as a responsible and constructive opposition, alleging that they are instead trying to obstruct pro-people measures such as the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), a monthly assistance of Rs 1500 to women above 18 years old, and free electricity. He noted that BJP leaders, including Jai Ram Thakur, have not clearly stated their stance on these issues, and have opposed these initiatives during election campaigns.
The Deputy CM highlighted that the BJP’s attempts to force frequent elections and destabilize the government have been unsuccessful, as evidenced by their defeat in four bye-elections. He emphasized that the upcoming bye-election for three more assembly seats should prompt the BJP to apologize for their actions.
Agnihotri also alleged that the central government aided the state BJP leadership in their efforts to topple the Congress government, providing support to six rebel Congress MLAs and using central agencies. Despite these efforts, the people of Himachal Pradesh have rejected the BJP’s strategies, supporting Congress candidates instead.
He accused the central government of discriminating against Himachal Pradesh, citing reduced GST compensation, a lower borrowing limit, and restrictions on foreign funding. Agnihotri argued that these measures have negatively impacted the state’s economy, further hindering development projects.
